The Império de São Pedro was founded by a group of the first Portuguese pioneers and friends who emigrated from the Azores Islands in the 1950's. It was incorporated in the city of Edmonton on May 14, 1979 and the first celebration of the Império de São Pedro was held from June 28 to 30, 1979.

This tradition was started in the 1300's by Queen Isabel, wife of King Dinis of Portugal. Every year on Pentecost Sunday, Queen Isabel celebrated the feast of the Holy Spirit. On this occasion she donated food to the poor and crowned all the children present at the celebration.

Azoreans are very devoted to the Holy Spirit and this is a very strong and vivid part of their culture. When the people of the Azores emigrated to Brazil and North America they took with them this tradition. This is one of the most religious traditions among the Azorean people. The person in charge of the celebration is given the title of "Mordomo" (Majordomo) the following is a list of the Mordomos since the establishement of Divino Espirito Santo de São Pedro Association in Edmonton the common name used among the Portuguese community is "Império de São Pedro"
